They may be away signified by a red dot or idle signified by a yellow dot , but they are at least logged in and online. Adding buddies to your list is easy. You can then select which of your groups you want to add the friend to and also enter their real first and last names if you want. Click Add, and your new friend will appear on your buddy list. This enables you to divide everyone on your buddy list into more manageable lists. For example, you can create a group called Work People and put all your colleges into that group.

Select Add Group, and in the drop-down menu that appears, enter the name of your new group. Click Add, and your new group will appear on your buddy list. However, at this time, your new group will be empty.

You still need to put people into it. Adding people to groups is easy. Simply click a name from wherever it resides in your buddy list and drag it onto the group header to which you want to add it. Newly added buddies will not actually appear in the group unless they are online.

If they are offline, they will appear only in the offline group. When they come online, they will jump from the offline group to the group that you have selected to put them in. Figure 10—5 shows you a buddy list with multiple groups. One is called Europe, and the others are Work People and Family. As mentioned, you can move people from one group to the next simply by dragging their names around.

However, besides the Offline group, a friend can reside in only one other group at a time. Using Figure 10—5 as an example, if I added Epiphany Jones to the Family group, she would automatically be removed from her current Europe group.

Initiating a text chat with someone also known as an instant message is easy. Simply double-click their name in the buddy list, and a new instant message window will open Figure 10—6.

To begin chatting to someone, simply enter text in the text field at the bottom of the instant message window and then press Return on your keyboard. Your text will be displayed in a colored speech bubble on the right side. When the person who you are chatting with replies, their text will be shown in a different-colored speech bubble on the left side. Click this to display a drop-down menu of emoticons commonly known as smilies into your text chats.

Another cool feature of iChat is that it incorporates all your different chats into one tabbed window, even if one of those chats is from your Google Talk account and one is from your AIM account. As you can see in Figure 10—7 , all your open chats are displayed in the same window, and to switch from one to the next, simply click the name of the person in the tabbed sidebar.

You then need to make sure they have a microphone on their computer. If you see a green video camera icon next to their name in the buddy list as shown in Figure 10—3 , that means they have a camera and microphone. To begin an audio chat, simply click the telephone icon next to the friend you want to chat with. As you can see in Figure 10—8 , an audio chat window appears when your friend has accepted your invitation to talk. As you speak, the audio meter increases and decreases in response to sound.

This lets you know that you are indeed connected. You can also mute your side of the call by clicking the mute button. To initiate a video chat, simply click the video camera icon next to the friend you want to video chat with.

When you initiate a video chat with someone, the video chat window appears Figure 10—9. When they do, the video chat window appears Figure 10— The main body of the window displays the video feed of the friend to whom you are talking. The box in the corner displays you, or whatever the person on the other end of the video chat is seeing. The buttons at the bottom of the video chat window give you additional options. You can also mute your side of the video call by clicking the mute button.

If you want to video chat full-screen, click the button of the two arrows that are pointing in opposite directions. Finally, you can add effects to your video calls for some fun. Apple has included more than 40 special effects that let you set custom backdrops, morph your image, and add filters to your video. To see all the effects, click the Effects button at the bottom of a video chat window. The Video Effects pop-up Figure 10—11 will appear, allowing you to browse all the effects.

Find the one you want and click it to apply it to the video chat. Apple has built some nice sharing features into iChat. With iChat Theater you can present web pages, files, and photos in a video chat window. To initiate an iChat theater presentation, all you have to do is simply drag any file onto an open video chat window, and the person you are video chatting with will see it instead of you on their screen. Screen sharing is another feature of iChat.

It allows you to create a shared desktop with anyone in your buddy list. What that means is that, during screen sharing, both you and the person you are sharing your screen with will have full access to your computer.

They can open and edit files and even delete them if they want. CAUTION: Obviously, privacy and security are big issues with the screen-sharing feature of iChat, so share your screen only with those people on your buddy list that you absolutely trust!

Then, click the Screen Sharing button at the bottom of the buddy list window Figure 10—3. The software also includes Jabber support, which means you can use iChat to connect to other IM networks—including Facebook Chat. Adium offers built-in Facebook support; iChat still requires that you configure Facebook Chat manually.
